What Is God?

If God is only half what the word implies, the topic deserves your greatest attention, and theology (the knowledge of God) is the most important science. Some use “God” and connected words to swear; others dedicate their lives to Him. What about you?

God is the common word for a supreme being, a deity, a divine person, and/or the creator or ruler of the universe and benefactor or judge of mankind. Though used as a name, it is rather a descriptive noun or title of a supreme being of various names.

In monotheistic religions – that have only one God – the word God is used as a name. Since there are no other gods, the common word God can be used as the name for the one God. Jews and Christians have only one God – and His name is Jehovah.

Some say the origin of the universe and life on earth were by intelligent design. They fear the use of the words God or Creator, so they instead refer to the wisdom and creative ability of God by nonreligious words to be more politically acceptable.

The Bible says God created all things out of nothing by Himself (Heb 11:3). He is of infinite intelligence (omniscience) and power (omnipotence), and the creation reflects His glory. Men know He exists by His creation (Ps 19:1-6; Rom 1:19-20).

Therefore, those who deny the existence of God are fools (Ps 14:1). The Bible and we ignore atheists, because they are mentally deranged, denying the obvious and reasoning from an insane presupposition that chaos is the origin of all things and the wisdom of baboons is the highest intelligence in the universe.

The Bible says God is sovereign. He not only made all things – He made them for Himself and His pleasure – even wicked men for their destruction (Pr 16:4; Rev 4:11). If this is only half true, you should want to learn about Him and honor Him.

God is a spirit (John 4:24). God is not limited by flesh, blood, and bones of a body. He is always invisible. No one can see God; no one has seen God; no one ever will see God. He sent His Son with a human body into the world for men to see (Jn 1:18).

The Bible uses male pronouns for God, because man is made in the image of God and best represents Him by his authority and headship. It is blasphemy to describe Him as a woman in perverse presentations like William P. Young’s, The Shack.

The visible creation only reveals some of the eternal power and nature of God, but the Bible is filled with much detail about His personality, character, intentions, accomplishments, promises, and limitations. It tells how a person can be His friend.
