What Is God’s Name?
13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
15 And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations. Ex 3:13-15
And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them. Exodus 6:3
That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth. Psalm 83:18
The Bible records the names of many gods – Ashtoreth of the Zidonians, Baal of the Phoenicians, Chemosh of the Moabites, Dagon of the Philistines, Milcom of the Ammonites, and many others.
Religions in the world today have names for their gods – Allah for Islam, Krishna and Vishnu and Shiva among many deities of the Hindus, the Great Spirit of the American Indians, and many others.
Paul admitted the world’s many gods, but they are nothing. Christians know there is only one God (I Cor 8:4-6). Paul exposed the Greek’s idolatry, polytheism, and ignorance of the true God (Acts 17:18-31).
A Creator God is easily known by creation, providence, and conscience, but the Bible is the only supernatural source that names God and provides all the attributes of His Person, character, and conduct.
The Bible begins with God existing in eternity and creating the universe from nothing (Gen 1:1-3). This God revealed Himself to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as the one only Almighty God (Gen 17:1; 28:3).
The Bible mocks all other gods as nonexistent figments of human imagination and men serving them as being as stupid as their idols and held captive by their own lies (Ps 115:1-8; Is 43:8-15; 44:7-10).
But God chose one nation on earth for religious worship, and He revealed Himself much more fully to them, including His name. The Creator God of the Bible is Jehovah, which means, I AM THAT I AM.
This eternal, independent, and infinite Being is the only God. Any contrary claim has no basis beyond the imagination and lies of men. For example, Allah may be no more than the moon god of the Arabians.
The four consonants of I AM THAT I AM form the Jewish tetragrammaton, which the KJV identifies over 6,000 times as LORD (all capitals). The tetragrammaton pointed up with vowels is Jehovah.
Many Bible names include portions or all of Jehovah as prefixes or suffixes e.g. Jehovah-Jireh (Gen 22:14), Jehoshua (Num 13:16), Jehoshaphat (II Sam 8:16), Elijah (I Ki 17:1), and Alleluia (Rev 19:1).
Jehovah, I AM THAT I AM, is the only true and living God, the Creator God of the Bible. His Son is Jesus, or Jehoshua in Hebrew, which means Jehovah is salvation, as the angel specified (Matt 1:21).
Do you know this God? The Bible tells you about Him and His Son. You should fear and love both.
