Proverbs 1:27

When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.

Fear – destruction – distress – anguish! These are four terrible things. They can tear at your soul and trouble your heart. They are enough to torture your spirit. They search you out in any place and torment you even in your bed. Terror, desolation, grief, and despair are horrible punishments. God sends them on those persons who reject His wisdom.

The true God offers wisdom from heaven for your success and happiness (Pr 1:20-23,33; 3:13-18; 8:1-21). Getting wisdom, to obtain these precious benefits, should be the most important goal in your life (Pr 4:5-9; 18:1; 16:16). But if you neglect His gracious offer, He will turn against you, and nothing will be able to save you (Pr 1:24-32; Ps 50:22).

This proverb is part of Solomon’s first personification of wisdom (Pr 1:20-33). Lady Wisdom offers wisdom to foolish men (Pr 1:20-23,33), but she is very vengeful to any that despise her offer (Pr 1:24-32). She promises to laugh at your calamities and mock when you are terrified with fear, because you would not respond to her generous offer.

What is wisdom? The power of right judgment! Wisdom knows the truth in any matter and the perfect conduct in any situation. It clearly grasps and does those things that please God and men. Jehovah God offers wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and discretion through the natural creation and the Bible (Ps 19:1-11; 119:128; Is 8:20; II Tim 3:16-17).

There is no excuse for men to reject God’s truth and wisdom (Rom 1:18-20). Because they do not glorify God or give thanks, He darkens their hearts (Rom 1:21). Because they assume they are wise and honor the creature above the Creator, He gives them reprobate minds to shame each other with abominable sexual perversions (Rom 1:22-27).

God does not have to hear or answer your prayers. He will not hear or answer those who reject the preaching of His word (Pr 28:9; Ps 66:18). When fear chases your soul into desolation, when destruction comes like a tornado, and when distress and anguish torture your spirit, He will laugh at your calamities. Because you scoffed at wisdom when it was offered, He will send the angel of the Lord to chase and persecute you (Ps 35:5-6).

When the true gospel is offered, you should sell all you have to buy it (Pr 23:23; Matt 13:44-46). The Jews made light of Jesus Christ’s kingdom and persecuted His apostles, but this great King destroyed those murderers and burned up their city by Roman armies in 70 AD (Mat 22:1-7). Reader! It is much better to break yourself in repentance by falling on Him than to have Him fall on you and grind you to powder (Mat 21:44). Believe on Jesus Christ today, repent of your sins, and pursue Him with your might.
